Just a few days after Hurricane Beryl swept through Houston, I found myself eagerly planning a night at the theater to see the iconic Lion King Broadway musical at the Hobby Center. Despite the challenges posed by the aftermath of the storm, including power outages, nothing was going to stop me from experiencing this legendary musical. Fortunately, we arrived early, which gave us ample time to enjoy a pre-show drink, admire the intricate masks on display from the show, and pick up a souvenir.
Celebrating 25 landmark years on Broadway, The Lion King remains one of the most beloved stage musicals worldwide. The anticipation was palpable, and the show did not disappoint. It was an AMAZING experience from start to finish. The entire cast was phenomenal, and I was particularly impressed with how they brought the legendary cartoon movie to life on stage. The adaptation was seamless, with humorous moments that had the audience laughing out loud and songs that were even more powerful live.
Arrival and pre-show experience
Arriving early at the Hobby Center is always a good idea, especially for a popular show like The Lion King. This gave us the opportunity to enjoy the ambiance of the theater and explore the displays related to the musical. The masks on display were stunning, offering a glimpse into the incredible craftsmanship that goes into the production. We also took the time to grab a drink and a few souvenirs, which added to the overall excitement of the evening.
The show
The Lion King is truly a visual and auditory feast. The opening number, “Circle of Life,” was breathtaking, with the elaborate costumes and life-sized puppets immediately drawing the audience into the world of the African savannah. The performances were top-notch, with each cast member bringing their character to life with passion and precision. The humor, the emotion, and the sheer energy of the show were infectious, making it a memorable experience for everyone in attendance.
One of the highlights for me was seeing how the iconic songs from the movie were brought to life on stage. Songs like “Hakuna Matata” and “Can You Feel the Love Tonight” were performed with such enthusiasm and talent that it felt like hearing them for the first time. The live orchestra added an extra layer of magic to the performance, enhancing the emotional impact of each song. We had seats very close to the aisle, which was fantastic because the show features several moments with cast members moving up and down the aisle, bringing the performance right to us.
Practical tips for attending
If you’re planning to see The Lion King at the Hobby Center, here are a few practical tips to ensure a smooth and enjoyable experience:
- Arrive early: Give yourself plenty of time to find parking and explore the theater before the show starts. This will also allow you to enjoy the pre-show displays and grab a drink or snack.
- Parking: Valet and Hobby Center garage parking are subject to availability. Large attendance at various performances can create high demand, potentially limiting access and resulting in the closing of valet and/or self-parking before the start time of the performance. Overflow parking is available in Theater District Parking Garages with entrances on both Rusk and Capitol Streets, if necessary.
- Tickets: The Tony®-award-winning musical is playing at the Hobby Center from Thursday, July 11, 2024, through Sunday, August 4, 2024, as part of the Memorial Hermann Broadway at the Hobby Center 2023-2024 Season. I highly recommend grabbing some tickets to witness this legendary musical for yourself.
