Every summer has its anthem. From “Despacito” in 2017 to “Running Up That Hill” in 2022, one track always seems to take over. This year, the race looked wide open, with “no song of the summer” becoming one of Google’s top searches in July.
Ever since I saw Ben Platt’s “Diet Pepsi” cover, my YouTube history is just… that video, on repeat.
Aug 10 update: It’s now on Spotify!

Buzz started building after Platt performed a heartfelt cover of Addison Rae’s “Diet Pepsi” at the Las Culturistas Culture Awards on August 5. The moment lit up social media, and I’ve seen multiple tiktok videos of people sharing my same love for it.
Some of my favorite comments:
@Bella: The earth YEARNS for more glee
@Haiden Rodgers, DVM: This is about to go platinum on my phone
@Hannah Hen: Lowkey….. put this on Spotify
@Cassidy: Close enough—welcome back Blaine Anderson
At least for me, I will count it as MY song of the summer!!
For context, here are the most-searched songs of summer in the U.S. over the past decade:
2015: The Hills – The Weeknd
2016: Panda – Desiigner
2017: Despacito – Justin Bieber, Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee
2018: In My Feelings – Drake
2019: Old Town Road – Lil Nas X ft. Billy Ray Cyrus
2020: WAP – Cardi B ft. Megan Thee Stallion
2021: Fancy Like – Walker Hayes
2022: Running Up That Hill – Kate Bush
2023: Try That In A Small Town – Jason Aldean
2024: Not Like Us – Kendrick Lamar
Could 2025 might be remembered as the summer of “Diet Pepsi”?
